Amira’s plight caught the attention of Lara, a compassionate Canadian woman deeply involved in dog rescues on Instagram. Touched by Amira’s story, Lara made it her mission to offer the dog the love and care she deserved, promptly welcoming her into her home.
Today, in the serene landscapes of Canada, Amira revels in a life filled with joy and contentment. Despite her 13 years and the challenges she’s faced, her spirit remains undiminished, radiating vitality and happiness. Meet Amira, a two-legged dog who finally found happiness after nine years on the streets, thanks to the Soi Dog Foundation and a compassionate individual who gave her a loving home.
Originally from Thailand, Amira was rescued by the Soi Dog Foundation after being found with a gunshot wound to her head
Lara began by introducing herself: “I reside in Montreal, Canada, with my husband, two teenagers, and four dogs. My passion for animals surpasses the average, and I avidly follow numerous dog rescues on Instagram. The dedication of these organizations never fails to impress me.”
Lara shared her motivation for reaching out to the Soi Dog Foundation and ultimately adopting Amira, despite already having three dogs.
“It was Soi Dog’s recent video featuring a sweet street dog named Amira, born without front legs, surviving for nine years until being shot in the head. Seeing Amira, so frail and wounded, with a hole over her left eye, yet her tail never ceasing to wag even amidst the pain of treatment at the Soi Dog Foundation, broke my heart. I knew then that I couldn’t risk her ending up with someone who wouldn’t provide her with everything she deserved. I just wanted to shower her with love and give her the happy ending she deserved,” Lara revealed.
Lara, now Amira’s devoted mom, stumbled upon posts about her story in 2020. Since then, she has dedicated herself to providing Amira with the loving home she deserves in Canada.
Lara shared her experience and the challenges her family faced during the overseas adoption process:
“When Amira first arrived at the shelter, there were concerns about her health, as her liver and kidneys were severely affected by years of scavenging for food. Despite this, I was determined to help in any way I could. The adoption coordinator kindly kept me updated with videos and health reports, even arranging for me to FaceTime with Amira. After six months of anxious waiting, she finally healed enough to make the journey to Canada.
However, the timing couldn’t have been more challenging. It was 2020, amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, and Soi Dog Foundation had no flight volunteers due to travel restrictions. Typically, volunteers flying between Canada and Thailand would assist by bringing the dog as cargo, significantly reducing shipping costs. With this option unavailable, we had to bear the full expense of shipping Amira to us. Despite the financial strain, I was unwavering in my determination to bring her home.
After a grueling 22-hour flight from Bangkok to Montréal, Amira emerged from her crate with boundless energy, as if she had known us forever. It was a heartwarming homecoming, and her excitement mirrored ours perfectly. There was no adjustment period – it was as if she had been eagerly awaiting this moment her entire life,” Lara recounted.
